Helen Breach Counselling and Therapy

If you are reading this, you are probably thinking about having counselling/therapy. It is often a frightening prospect to think about your own vulnerability and it takes courage to seek therapy. I am very aware that it can be on your mind for months, or it can be when you are in a crisis in the moment that you think about finding someone to help you. Sometimes people just want help to grow for the better to feel more content or to find a more helpful way of thinking about themselves.

I am an experienced integrative therapist, what that means is that I use different skills from different therapy orientations to best suit you.

Clients have told that I am both kind ,empathic and a nonjudgmental therapist. Offering clients a safe space to talk through any difficulties that they have in their lives. Whether it be from childhood, relationships, work or loss.

We are all different and that is to be celebrated. Often, clients have more than one thing to explore which I completely understand since I have worked with a wide variety of difficulties.

I am also an experienced Cognitive Analytical Therapist which is a collaborative, structured therapy. Exploring your past experiences and how the beliefs you hold about yourself and other people are learnt in early life.

Initial Assessment

The initial assessment session is an opportunity to find out about each other, to answer any questions you may have, and how I might best help you with your problems. The relationship between the therapist and client is important for any successful therapy. It’s a time for you to find out if you feel comfortable with me, and for us to get to know each other, and to discover what your goal is in therapy.

After the initial assessment session we will decide on how to proceed if you feel encouraged that the therapy feels right and whether we agree that what I offer will be helpful to you. If agreed, we will decide on a day of the week and time, which is usually the same each week.

Sessions are of 50 minute duration of both short and longer term therapy. Once agreed I will provide you with my contract Ways of Woking and privacy information. Where possible I will be flexible with times of sessions.

How does Therapy Work?

Therapy works by providing a safe, warm non judgemental space.

It is a safe space in which you can share your feelings with someone. I walk beside you on this journey of growth and discovery and guide you through the process. Therapy is a process of self discovery and shared ideas. I feel privileged that my clients trust me to listen and understand in an accepting and empathetic way.

You will be able to gain awareness and insight into your feelings and behaviours. To understand how your experience in life can shape the way you think about yourself which has roots in childhood.

The way you react to present experiences and situations can be learnt patterns of reacting or behaving. You will learn how to challenge your negative thoughts and feelings which is often the critical monologue that you have about yourself inside.

You will not only gain an understanding of yourself but also of other people. Therapy can help you get to know yourself better, clarify issues that matter to you and develop your potential to grow. It gives you the opportunity to work in ways which promote your ability to resolve problems, or develop skills for things which cannot be changed.

The key advantage of having integrative therapy is it’s flexible and focuses on the whole person. The integration of different approaches means that it is flexible to individual concerns and needs.

Relationships

‘No man is an island entire of itself’ poem by John Donne.

Humans need connections with others. The irony is that this maybe, because of the uncomfortable relationship they have with themselves.

All healthy relationship share mutual trust, respect and communication.

Unhealthy relationships can lead to co dependency, resentment and jealousy.

Clients often come to therapy because of relationship problems and sometimes it’s because of the relationship they have with themselves.

In my work, I am very interested in relationships and how they affect our wellbeing. Awareness of how the mother and child relationship can shape our ability to know how to give and receive love. Something which, if not learned, can affect our relationships with other people in our lives.
